From the perspective of transmission media and speed, LAN switches can be categorized into Ethernet switches, Fast Ethernet switches, Gigabit Ethernet switches, FDDI switches, ATM switches, and Token Ring switches, among others. These switches are suitable for environments such as Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, FDDI, ATM, and Token Ring, respectively.
From the perspective of application scale, there are also enterprise-level switches, departmental-level switches, and workgroup switches. The classification standards vary slightly among manufacturers. Generally, enterprise-level switches are rack-mounted, departmental-level switches can be rack-mounted or fixed-configuration, while workgroup-level switches are generally fixed-configuration and have simpler functions. Furthermore, in terms of application scale, when used as backbone switches, switches supporting more than 500 data points in large enterprises are considered enterprise-level switches, switches supporting fewer than 300 data points in medium-sized enterprises are considered departmental-level switches, and switches supporting fewer than 100 data points are considered workgroup-level switches.
