Switches are not single products, but rather categorized based on multiple dimensions to facilitate user selection according to specific needs.

1. By transmission medium: Ethernet switches are the most common type, supporting both copper (UTP/STP) and fiber optic connections. Copper cables are suitable for short-distance home scenarios, such as connecting routers and NAS storage within 100 meters; fiber optics are used for long-distance enterprise backbone networks, supporting multimode or single-mode transmission with speeds up to 40G or even higher. With the widespread adoption of "dual-gigabit" broadband, gigabit Ethernet switches have become standard in homes, ensuring smooth downloads for multiple devices simultaneously.

2. By management type: Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play, requiring no configuration, suitable for small networks such as homes or SOHO offices. They are affordable, typically have 5-8 ports, and transmission speeds of 100M or gigabit. Managed switches provide CLI, web interfaces, or SNMP protocols, supporting traffic monitoring, port mirroring, and link aggregation (LACP). For example, in a 50-person office, a company can monitor bandwidth usage and optimize resource allocation through a managed switch. Intelligent managed switches fall between the two, providing basic web management and offering high cost-effectiveness.

3. Based on port count and speed, there's a wide range available, from entry-level 5-port 100Mbps switches to data center-grade 48-port 10G switches. Stackable switches allow multiple devices to be logically combined into one, facilitating expansion; PoE switches can power IP cameras or wireless access points via Ethernet cables, simplifying smart home wiring. When renovating a new home, choosing a PoE-enabled switch provides a dual-purpose solution for living room monitoring and kitchen appliances, reducing the hassle of running cables within the walls.
